The WRRC Environmental Chemistry Lab operates as a Special Fund Research Recharge Center (SRRC) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. We are equipped with state-of-the-art and workhouse instrumentation for the detection of a wide variety of environmental pollutants.

Our facility serves UH researchers, state/federal agencies, as well as community and private industry partners, offering both full-service sample analysis and independent instrument access.

Analytical Services

Sample Analysis. Submit your samples to our staff for analysis. We provide high-quality, research-grade data tailored to your project requirements. Detailed analysis information can be found here, such as analytes and detection limits. See also: Sample Preparation Guidelines

  • ICP-S: Sample analysis for common metals, metalloids and non-metals. Soluble or Total Recoverable Elements by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy.
    • ICP-P: Sample Preparation for ICP-S (Total Recoverable Elements).
  • Ion-S: Common inorganic anions and cations by ion chromatography.
  • PAH-S: Common Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) by liquid chromatography.
  • TOC-S: Total Organic Carbon as Non-Purgeable Organic Carbon (NPOC) and Total Nitrogen (TN); or Inorganic Carbon (IC); or TOC as TC-IC.
  • HRMS-S: Untargeted analysis by Orbitrap High Resolution Mass Spectrometry.
  • PFAS-S: Sample analysis for common per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.
    • PFAS-P: Sample preparation for PFAS-S.

Instrument Time. Qualified researchers may book time to operate the instruments independently. Prior training and approval by the Lab Manager are required. Available instruments can be found here.

How to Get Started

  1. Consultation: Contact us to discuss project scope and sample preparation.
  2. Review the User Agreement sent to the Principal Investigator: All PIs must complete the User Agreement before work begins.
  3. Complete an Intake Form: Complete an Intake Form for each project utilizing our service(s). Use Form A for sample analysis or Form B for instrument time.
  4. A. Submit Samples: Ensure submissions follow our Sample Preparation Guidelines to avoid processing delays.
    B1. Qualified researchers should schedule instrument-specific training. Confirmation of successful completion of Initial Lab Safety Training (through EHSO) is required.
    B2. Those who have successfully completed instrument-specific training can submit an Instrument Booking Form to book time or request editing permission to the instrument calendar.

Payment Information

Internal users. A monthly invoice will be emailed to the PI for acknowledgement and signature. WRRC will process payment through KFS Internal Billing.
External users. A monthly invoice will be emailed to you. We accept payment by check or electronic bank transfer.
