2008 Lau Scholarship
Daniel Amato is the Winner of the 2008 Lau Scholarship

This year's winner of the L. Stephen Lau Water Research Endowed Scholarship is Daniel Amato. Daniel is a Masters student in Marine Botany at UH Manoa. Daniel's winning submission included a proposal for research he is undertaking on submarine freshwater discharges and their effect on the ecological success of reef macroalgae.

WRRC's former director (1971-1990), Dr. L. Stephen Lau, and his wife, Virginia Lau generously established the L. Stephen Lau Water Research Endowed Scholarship Fund in 2004 to advance the cause of water education at the University of Hawaii. Dr. Lau has been a leader in water research in the State for many years. He continues to serve as an emeritus professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Hawaii.

WRRC Director Dr. James Moncur treated Daniel, the Dr. and Mrs. Lau and their son Ronald, and a few others to a celebratory luncheon in June at the Kirin Restuarant.
